陽虎是魯國季孫氏的家臣，一直輔佐魯國的執(zhí)政者季平子，擁有很大的權(quán)勢，一心想成為一國之君。機(jī)會終于來了，季平子去世后，他把皇位的繼承者季桓子囚禁起來。從此陽虎一手遮天，成了魯國幕后的國君，掌握著所有的實權(quán)。
當(dāng)時孔子已經(jīng)步入中年，他主張的“仁政”在社會上很有名氣。陽虎為擴(kuò)大自己的影響，希望孔子到自己手下做官，他三番五次地邀請孔子商談做官事宜，都遭到了孔子的斷然拒絕。原來孔子瞧不起陽貨，而且還和他有過小小的過結(jié)，陽虎曾經(jīng)拒絕讓孔子參加季氏家族舉行的宴會，并且還奚落孔子的理論。現(xiàn)在，孔子看穿了陽虎囚君篡位的面目，決心不和他見面，想方設(shè)法避開他。
陽虎并沒有就此放棄，他想出了一個好主意。當(dāng)時有個禮節(jié)，諸侯贈賞禮物給士，如果士剛好不在家，那么他回來時，一定要親自拜訪諸侯，以表示感謝。陽虎故意趁孔子不在家時給他送去了一份厚禮，這樣一來，孔子就會親自登門拜見。可是他的如意算盤打錯了，孔子“以其人之道，還治其人之身”，趁陽虎出門在外時回訪了他
一次，孔子遠(yuǎn)遠(yuǎn)地看見陽虎朝自己走來，便轉(zhuǎn)身往回走，可陽虎已經(jīng)快步跑過來。
陽虎說：“你提倡'仁’，但不幫助國家，解決國家問題，你這是'仁’嗎？”孔子默不作聲。
陽虎見孔子沒有說話，以為他心有所動。又問：“歲月不饒人，你現(xiàn)在上了年紀(jì)，卻一次次錯失送上門的機(jī)會，你這算聰明嗎？你不是想干一番事業(yè)嗎？現(xiàn)在我給你崇高的地位和享之不盡的財富，你還等什么呢？”
孔子理直氣壯地回答：“盡管我提倡'學(xué)而優(yōu)則仕’，也提倡'仁’，但我還要看看我侍奉的國君是不是仁君，值不值得我去輔佐他！”
孔子說完這句話就徑直朝前走去，只剩下陽虎站在那里發(fā)呆。
修身養(yǎng)性：每個人的追求和目的都不一樣，人生志趣也不一樣，正所謂“志不同，道不和”。所以要及早對自己的事業(yè)在心中有所規(guī)劃，而不要隨波逐流，人云亦云。因為表面的地位和財富只能滿足虛榮，不能提升自己的人格，更不是人生最終的追求。
